ExxonMobil Completes Pipeline for Guyana’s Gas-To-Energy Project

Georgetown, Guyana – ExxonMobil has achieved a significant milestone in Guyana’s energy sector, marking the mechanical completion of the Gas-to-Energy (GTE) pipeline. This pipeline is designed to transport natural gas from Exxon’s offshore oil production fields in the Stabroek Block to onshore facilities at Wales, West Bank Demerara. ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge shared this progress at a recent media conference, emphasizing the pipeline’s readiness for future gas transmission.

The completion included essential steps like hydro and pressure testing, followed by filling the pipeline with nitrogen to preserve it until operations begin. The pipeline’s offshore section connects to Exxon’s Liza Unity and Liza Destiny FPSO vessels, both of which underwent brief shutdowns this past summer for the installation and tie-in of risers, making the offshore pipeline fully operational.

This GTE project, part of a larger US$759 million investment in energy infrastructure, is expected to significantly reduce electricity costs and boost industrial growth in Guyana. The onshore facility will feature a 300-megawatt power plant and a gas-processing unit, expected to become operational in 2025. Once fully functional, this project will help Guyana transition to more sustainable and affordable energy sources, promising to lower power costs by up to 50%.

The completion of Exxon’s portion of the GTE project keeps the timeline on track, with the company expected to hand over the pipeline segment to the Guyanese government upon completion of the onshore facility.
