OQ Gas Networks to Inaugurate 208 km Pipeline in Oman

Dhofar, Oman – August 2024 — OQ Gas Networks (OQGN), Oman’s primary natural gas operator, is set to launch a new 208-kilometer natural gas pipeline in the Dhofar region, enhancing the nation’s gas distribution capacity. The Saib Project, a $196 million investment, will boost the region’s gas network by 60%, increasing the total capacity to 16 million cubic meters per day.

Scheduled for inauguration on August 26, 2024, the project involves the construction of two pipeline loops, each 32 inches in diameter, running parallel to an existing 24-inch line. The new infrastructure will serve as a critical addition to Oman’s 4,223-kilometer pipeline network, supplying natural gas to power plants, desalination facilities, and industrial sites(Pipeline Journal).

Meeting Growing Demand

The Dhofar region has experienced increasing demand for natural gas due to population growth and economic expansion. In the first half of 2024, Oman’s gas production and imports rose by 5.3%, reaching 27.58 billion cubic meters. This new pipeline is expected to help meet the growing needs of industrial projects, which consumed over 64% of the country’s gas in 2024(Pipeline Journal).

Strategic Importance

This project is part of Oman’s broader effort to modernize its energy infrastructure and support economic growth. OQGN’s focus on enhancing the natural gas network aligns with the country’s Vision 2040, aiming to boost energy security and expand industrial capacity. Additionally, this pipeline strengthens the infrastructure for potential future hydrogen transport, as Oman seeks to become a key player in the global green energy market(Oman Observer ).

The Saib Project reflects Oman’s commitment to meeting its energy needs while preparing for future demands in both natural gas and renewable energy.
